Voice Matching Jennifer Coolidge

Voice matching is so much fun, but isn't just about quoting a heap of lines from a movie (uh hem, even this is exactly what I'm demonstrating in this video!) Understanding the personality of the character and capturing their essence is really what pulls off a great performance. Especially when it comes to ADR (Automated dialogue replacement).

When I look at a character I try and nail these 4 things:

  1. Voice placement. Is their voice in their chest or high up in their cheeks? In the case of Jennifer, her voice is at the back of her throat with loads of breathiness.

  2. Mouth posture. Looking and imitating how they move their face and mouth will help resonate sound in the right place. Jennifer's mouth tilts down and spreads out.

  3. Cadence. Does the person speak fast or slow, does it stop and start, get higher in pitch as they talk?

  4. Personality. This is the best bit! Capturing the essence of the character. What are they like? Frustrated all the time, gushy or cocky? A lot of Jennifer's characters in my opinion tend to be anxious and insecure; unsure of the situation finding it hard to make a decision. Looking at the characters' motivation (yep, acting 101) helps you to really get into their head.

So here's my take on Jennifer Coolidge and all of her best bits from 'The White Lotus'
